Towards a public policy to reduce food waste in Greece

Mon 30 November 2020

We are particularly pleased that, after many years, the legal framework for a public policy on reducing food waste is also being set up in Greece.

It concerns the first, but very important step aimed at activating the State, raising awareness and educating the citizens, as well as mobilizing all stakeholders in a substantial change of attitude on such an important environmental, social and economic issue.

The basis is also laid for the launch of a systematic measurement of national food waste levels at each stage of the food chain, as a prerequisite for setting a quantitative reduction target, as well as for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the measures implemented.

Boroume through its daily activities for the reduction of food waste in Greece, and its participation in the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste, has been actively contributing to the formation of a favorable framework for years.

In addition, with the recent launch of the Alliance for the Reduction of Food Waste in Greece, we have created the most appropriate vehicle for the optimal representation of all parties, the development of synergies, dynamic mobilization and coordinated action to produce meaningful results.

As one of the goals of the Alliance is to serve as a consultation forum, we consider important its constructive contribution to the draft law of the Ministry of Environment and Energy for the incorporation of the revised EU legislation on waste (with regard to provisions aimed at preventing and reducing food waste).

Here you can read the relevant draft law, as it has been submitted for public consultation: http://www.opengov.gr/minenv/?p=11427
