Boroume participates in the SOUFOOD project

Mon 10 March 2025

The SOULFOOD project addresses the important issues of food loss and of food insecurity in Europe, where production surpluses are often wasted despite the imperative need for food by vulnerable populations. This waste results in the creation of serious environmental and social challenges.

Boroume, as an organization whose mission is to reduce food waste, is one of 4 European partners that are participating in the work of SOULFOOD, whose aim is to utilize surplus agricultural production for the benefit of charity organizations.

SOULFOOD aims to bridge this gap by using technological means to create a more sustainable and fair system of managing agricultural products. It focuses on creating an electronic platform to link producers who have surplus agricultural products with charities and local administrative agencies for redistribution. Producers can report their surplus agricultural products on the electronic platform, facilitating the charities in coordinating their delivery and distribution to people in need. This process prevents food waste while, at the same time, ensures that the food will reach people experiencing food insecurity. At the moment, the electronic platform is in a trial phase with producers and charities in Catalonia and Lithuania.

Given that 1/3 of agricultural production remains uncollected in the field, the SOULFOOD electronic platform is a modern tool for dealing with the serious challenge of food waste in the agricultural sector. As one of SOULFOOD’s partners, Boroume supports solutions that are aimed at reducing food waste in the agricultural sector.
