The collaboration between Boroume and Byron College continued in December too at the Farmers’ Market in Gerakas. In the context of the “Boroume at the Farmers’ Market” program, a total of 27 students, under the supervision of a Byron College teacher, became volunteer food saving heroes, taking part in 6 program actions. Their participation fostered a sense of team cooperation, while at the same time it showed how small acts have a great social and environmental impact.
At the farmers’ market of Gerakas, the young volunteers of Byron College saved approximately 444 kilos of fruit and vegetables with which they supported the “Hara” Center for Persons with Special Needs. This amount corresponds to approximately 1.776 portions of food, to 4.653 kilos of CO2 that were not released into the atmosphere because these foodstuffs supported people in need instead of being thrown away (4,653 kilos of CO2 correspond to 85 trips from Athens to Thessaloniki in a passenger car) as well as to 7.459.2 m³ of water that would have been wasted if the food had been thrown away.
Here’s what the young volunteers of Byron College had to say about their participation:
“Going to the farmers’ market was a lot of fun. It’s amazing to help other people. The vendors were also helpful and polite.” H.
“The farmers’ market was an excellent experience and I learned new things, such as how much food is wasted every day.” R.
“I liked going to the farmers’ market. It was a valuable experience that made me understand that I can make a difference in the world.” E.
“It was great to walk among the vendors’ stalls, collecting the leftover foodstuffs and to be a member of the community that inspires and helps others.” Κ.
