At 57 million tons of food, the total food waste in the EU in 2020

Tue 25 October 2022

According to today's announcement by Eurostat, the total food waste at European level amounted in 2020 to 57 million tons of food, which corresponds to 127 kg per inhabitant.

At the level of the food chain, the highest rate of waste was recorded in households, reaching 55% (31 million tons of food). This is followed by processing (18%), primary production (11%), catering (9%) and finally food retailing (7%). Tackling food waste remains a major challenge both at the European and the global level. At Boroume, since 2012, we have been making every effort through the holistic approach we have developed at the level of prevention and rescue & food supply, in order to limit waste in our country.
