The Motivational Power of Boroume # 6

Mon 05 October 2020

Boroume’s motivational power lies in its volunteers. Positive people of all ages and backgrounds who choose to dedicate some of their free time to giving to others. We "interrogated" Maria Symoni Stagaki, trying to understand what motivates her to participate in our work for the last 5 years, every time she is in Greece, during breaks from her studies abroad.

Maria Symoni, tell us:

A few words about you

I am 21 years old; my great loves are animals and books. I have the honor to participate in the activities of Boroume, since my school years, since 2015.

My studies have brought me to Munich, Germany, where I study political science and have been living for the last 4 years. For this reason my time in Greece is limited, but when I go back I want to consider myself as a "wild card”" volunteer. Where necessary, let me know and I will fill the gap. With my little help I try to offer as much as possible.

Why did you decide to become a volunteer?

When I was a minor, when I first started my "career" as a volunteer, Boroume was one of the few organizations that welcomed me with open arms. With full information of the guardians, but without being treated like a child, I felt like an equal member of the organization. Although I knew from a young age that volunteering would be a big part of my life, this open embrace and mutual respect that existed in this team, still keeps me here today.

How easy is it not to throw away food?

I think it is quite easy not to throw away food. I also understand that for many people the initial concept sounds tedious, but with proper information and organization, it really is not. With a little effort and a lot of good intentions it is absolutely possible for every household.

Describe in three words the team of Boroume

I cannot find three words for the team. But I can mention one that I always use to describe this group: Family. At least that's how I feel about the team I have participated in for the last 5 years. It is the joy of Angeliki, the stories of Alexander, the kindness of Anna and much more. Everyone has something to offer and is always welcoming. This group is a second family (with the social consciousness that may be missing from the first).

Tell us a favorite story from the House of Boroume

Boroume offers and continues to offer me many experiences, which never cease to amaze me. Especially the farmers’ market program that I adore, allows me to see different aspects of Greek society and to get in touch with various institutions whose existence I was not even aware of. Priceless stories full of laughter, appetite and positive energy that you do not find anywhere else. Every action is a new story!
