The most impressive facts of food waste

Fri 14 July 2017
In recent years, thanks to the extensive research on the phenomenon of food waste worldwide, many interesting facts have surfaced.

Below we have selected the 10 most impressive:

-1/3 of food produced globally ends is wasted
-Global food waste every year reaches 1.3 billion tons
-The value of global food waste every year amounts to 1.7 trillion
-8% of total anthropogenic GHG emissions is generated from food waste which means that 4.5 kg of CO2 is released into the atmosphere to produce one kilo of food
-If food waste was a country, it would be the third most polluting country in the world (China 1st, USA 2nd)
-The production of 30% of food which remains unconsumed is ultimately responsible for the use of an additional 50% water resources for irrigation and indicative of this is the production of one kilo of beef which needs 10,000 litres of water, while to produce a loaf of bread you need 1,000 litres of water
-88 million tons of food is wasted every year in the EU, which means that each citizen wastes about 173 kilos of food
-The percentages on the total food waste per category is: households 53%, processing 19%, retail trade 12%, primary sector 10%, wholesale sales 6%
-793 million people in the world are malnourished, while 1.9 billion are overweight and 600 million are obese
-US residents’ food waste would theoretically be sufficient to feed all the malnourished people in the world

Help us to reverse this extremely unpleasant phenomenon and on the one hand to reduce food waste and on the other hand increase food donations to those in need.
