The driving force of Boroume #14

Fri 30 July 2021
Boroume’s driving force is its volunteers.

Dimitris shares his thoughts with us on volunteering and his impressions from his participation in Boroume’s actions and work.

A few words about you:

I was born and raised in Agia Paraskevi, I am 20 years old and I study at Panteion University in the Department of Social Policy. I hail my origin from the beautiful island of Kythnos as well as from the mountainous, stone and red tile roofed Andritsena. I enjoy music and sports. I am a professional photographer, as I was born in a family of photographers. I love theater, journalism, literature and writing.

Why did you decide to become a volunteer?

During a web survey on volunteering in a variety of organizations, I entered the website of a well-known NGO in which I read this: "When you don’t give and expect to receive, you are an egoist. When you give and expect to receive, you are a man. When you give and you do not expect to receive, you are more. You are a volunteer.”   Perhaps this sentence has presented to me what volunteering actually is and coupled with the nature of my studies has become the driving force that has prompted me in this blessed decision.

How easy / difficult is to talk to someone about volunteering:

Personally, I am particularly pleased when the opportunity is given to me to discuss what volunteering is. In short I find it extremely easy to inform someone about the role of volunteering, and consider it my duty to. There is no moral barrier that prevents me from discussing it and I also think I would do it even if I knew that someone has an opposing view on the subject.

What reactions do you get?

With whomever I have discussed the role of volunteering I have only had positive comments, with expressions of enthusiasm and admiration at the same time. Also many are those who either after my own encouragement, or their personal perception and ideology informed me that they would like to get involved with volunteering when they are given the opportunity.

How easy it is not to throw away food:

I believe that this sacred target is easily achievable, under conditions. Like the right calculation of the amount of food and, of course, there is no cooking a meal, when there are remaining portions of previous days’ food in the refrigerator.

How to describe Boroume’s team in three words:

It is very difficult for me to describe Boroume’s team in only three words. I have just recently met the team since I am a new volunteer and the impressions are only the best. The ladies Angeliki, Barbara, Maria, Dia and Anna are all excellent. So I would describe it as: intimate, sweet, cooperative.

Share with us an incident from your participation in Boroume that impressed you:

Although I am a new volunteer there is already an incident that impressed me. From the very first day, Boroume’s team was able to "embrace" and make me feel that I am a member of the team.
