Rescue & Food Offering Partnerships: Municipality of Metamorfosi

Fri 25 February 2022
Maria Dourou, head of the Department of Social Policy & Public Health Promotion of the Municipality of Metamorfosi is not only our partner. She is a friend of Boroume and an active supporter of our message "Every Meal Matters". All these years through the  "Saving and Offering Food" program, we have managed together to support - almost on a daily basis- families in need. Every saving and offering food activity we achieve, is not just a process. Its’ actually an act of love for our fellow citizens and an act of gratitude for our food donors.

Below you can read more about the wonderful cooperation we have all these years with the Social Service of the Municipality of Metamorfosi and Mrs. Dourou.

A few words about the social structures and services of the Municipality of Metamorfosi:
The Municipality of Metamorfosi is a small Municipality, with about 30,000 inhabitants, which has an organized Department of Social Policy & Promotion of Public Health, providing services aimed at combating poverty, social exclusion, tackling the pandemic and its effects on mental health, health and social cohesion. There are a number of structures such as the Social Grocery and Meals with a total number of 680 beneficiaries. It also participates in the TEVA program with a regular distribution of basic goods to another 280 families, beneficiaries of the guaranteed minimum income. At the same time, there is a Psychological Support Office for children, adolescents and adults, an Unemployment Office for employment promotion, a Community Center, a Dementia Counseling Center, a KEP Health Center, Open Elderly Protection Centers, Home Care and Home Care Units.
The effort to organize the network of Social Structures and Services began in 2015 with the integration of the scattered Social Structures in the Directorate of Social Policy and continues to this day, by participating in actions and programs to expand and improve the services provided.

What motivated you to work with Boroume? As you know, meeting the needs of the beneficiary families requires significant financial resources that cannot often be raised from the budget of the Municipality. In our effort to meet the needs of our fellow citizens in the most effective way, we tried early on to organize a network of sponsors and to work with organizations like Boroume. It was very important for us to become part of the food rescue chain, in order to offer surplus food portions or products close to expiration date to people in need.

How did you find out about Boroume? I have known Boroume - if I remember correctly- since 2010. At that period I was working at the Municipality of Acharnes and we cooperated under the program “We are Family”. I learned about the organization after noticing an article or something relevant in the Internet. At that time Greece was facing a severe economic crisis and as known, many families were struggling with survival problems. So, I asked for their support.

Can you describe in a few words your collaboration with Boroume? Flawless. I do not know if this word is enough or if there is even a word that can describe in the most accurate way the collaboration we have developed for the past ten years. All Boroume volunteers are the best supporters of our project, giving us the opportunity on the one hand not to let any food portion go wasted and on the other hand to offer it to people facing food insecurity.

Complete the sentence: We can utilize EVERY portion of food.
