Over 128 tons of fruit and vegetables were saved and offered in 2018 by farmers’ markets

Wed 23 January 2019

The results of the program “Boroume at the Farmers’ Market” for the year 2018 indicate the saving of over 128 tons of fruit and vegetables, in cooperation with 23 farmers’ markets in Athens and Thessaloniki, and hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers.  The 128,000 kilos of surplus fruits and vegetables that were “saved” by the volunteers who participated in the actions of the program amount to several tens of thousands of nutritious food portions that aided charitable institutions in their work to support people who face food insecurity.

All this effort would not have amounted to these results if, apart from the support of the volunteers, Boroume did not have the support of the farmers’ markets as well as the continuous and unwavering support of the Hellenic Initiative Australia (THI).  The THI, in addition to the funding of the program “Boroume at the Farmers’ Market” actively supports the actions of the program with the participation of volunteers and ensures the promotion of Boroume’s work abroad.

In 2019, the program “Boroume at the Farmers’ Market’ will continue with unabated enthusiasm in the effort to help even more charitable institutions and people in need, “saving” excess fruit and vegetables from farmers’ markets that support the work of Boroume.
