Food saving week with Boroume at Dorothy Snot

Mon 17 February 2020
For some time now we have been discussing with the Dorothy Snot Preschool (the first educational organization to offer leftover food with the help of Boroume in 2012), the best way of inspiring its students on the subject of waste, something not so simple as we would target 3-6 year olds.

Of course, the first idea was to use the children's book "Dinosaur", which was created by our friends Antonis Papatheodoulou and Alexandra K. for this specific purpose. Then we thought it would be useful to hold a cooking event, where the children would bring whatever was leftover home and cook it to eat it and find that it's fine.

The truth is that knowing the school well we had very high expectations for this project. But nothing could prepare us for the quantity and, above all, the quality of the actions carried out by the children - with their teachers - especially given their age.
For about 3 weeks before the final event, two sections of the kindergarten, after being updated through websites, videos, by representatives of local farmers’ markets and supermarkets and Boroume, dealt with the issue of food waste and every aspect of it. Among other things, they created many small and large crafts based on Boroume’s food waste prevention guide, a floor informational game, a fruit-altering experiment, and up to many sign posted slogans for the demonstration we all did for rights of “ugly” fruit!

All of these actions culminated in our event on Sunday, February 9th, focusing on four (one for each class) production stations -smoothie, cold soup, banana bread and fruit salad from the leftover fruits and vegetables from home, and ended with the demonstration that we did together in the school yard.

In the end, as we found, not only were we wrong to reflect on the age of the students, but we understood that, under the proper guidance, these children aged 3-6 years old had gained a better and deeper knowledge of the issue of food waste than many adults in our society.

For this, as well as the many unforgettable experiences we have had, we thank Dorothy Snot from our hearts and hope they keep their promise to establish Food Saving Week as an annual program. We, for our part, promise that they will always have our full support!
