"Boroume at the Farmers’ Market" in Thessaloniki

Tue 15 December 2020

From 2018, Boroume has saved and offered surplus food from farmers’ markets in Thessaloniki to local charities. It all started in February 2018 with 2 farmers’ markets that collaborated with Boroume, while now a total of 7 farmers’ markets support charitable organizations and people in need with the produe that their sellers will not put out for sale the following day.

Since then until today, the 7 farmers’ markets of Thessaloniki have offered over 77.000 kilos. Remarkable is the response and generosity of the sellers of the farmers’ markets who support the work of Boroume with undiminished fervour even during the difficult period of the pandemic.

All this is achieved with the help of dozens of volunteers who have supported the weekly activities of the program "Boroume at the Farmers’ Market". Initially under the constant guidance and coordination of Panagiotis and the last months of Alexander, the people of Boroume in Thessaloniki, our groups of volunteers together with the charitable orgnaisations succeed in tens of kilos of surplus food every week not ending up in the landfill, but being utilized by people in need.

Boroume continues through its excellent cooperation with the farmers’ markets and the support of its volunteers, to support the charitable organizations of Thessaloniki, whose needs are increasing due to the pandemic. The goal is that in the near future the cooperation of Boroume with the farmers’ markets of the city will expand even more in order to save and to offer more valuable food to people who need it.

Finally, heartfelt thanks from all of us go to The Hellenic Initiative Australia for their unwavering support over the past five years.
