Participation in the meeting of the members of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste

Wed 23 January 2019

We eagerly participated in the meeting of the members of the European Union Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste (FLW), which took place at the beginning of December in Brussels.

The European Commission, international organizations, public authorities of EU member states, food rescue and redistribution organizations, universities, representative organizations from all over the food chain – production, distribution and consumption, reconfirmed their determination to vigorously pursue the action to reduce food waste.

We were informed and exchanged information, knowledge and good practices on the actions of organized civil society, initiatives of EU member states, public-private partnerships to tackle food waste, university and research institutes’ studies.

Among other issues, we dealt particularly with the progress made in the EU’s strategy for a circular economy and the results so far to reduce food waste.  Worthy of note is that according to the revised EU waste legislation, member states are obliged until 2020 to adopt an action plan to prevent food waste, to adapt their legislative framework and to provide quantitative data for waste levels.

We also discussed the current regulatory framework on food donation (incentives/obstacles) and redistribution practices applied in the member states.
