Boroume at the 6th meeting of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste

Thu 06 June 2019

We are happy to share with you the news from Brussels, where we participated in the sixth meeting of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste.

The European Commission, international organisations, EU Member States, food rescue and redistribution organisations and other NGOs, trade and business associations representing the entire food value chain, as well as universities and research institutes, we all work together to jointly achieve the objective of reducing food waste.

Equally extremely important is the inter-sectoral cooperation, public-private partnerships at the level of each EU Member State.

At the core of our work are the actions within the framework of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan. Under the revised European legislation, Member States are obliged until 2020 to adopt and implement targeted measures to prevent food wastage.

Among other things, we have particularly looked at the common EU-wide methodology that Member States have to follow in order to measure the levels of food wastage at each stage of the food chain.

Reliable measurement is, of course, a prerequisite for setting a baseline and evaluating the effectiveness of measures targeting reduction of food waste.

In the context of the discussion on "food rescue: the new future of food donation", we had the opportunity to exchange information and best practices. With special joy we informed the members of the platform about Boroume’s operational model of Saving & Offering Food.

Finally, we examined the framework for evaluating initiatives and actions to prevent food waste and their economic, social and environmental impact. We are honoured by the fact that in its report the European Commission has included a presentation of Boroume and its work among the initiatives implemented in the European Union to prevent food wastage.
