The value of volunteering

Wed 13 January 2021

Looking at the total quantities of food we managed to rescue in December as part of the actions of the "Boroume at the Farmers’ Market" programme, trying to help institutions that support people in need, I can only feel proud of the result. Let alone when this happens in the midst of a pandemic and global lockdown!

We usually focus mainly on the quantities we collect, which constitute the result and this is very important.  Just as important, however, and perhaps more than the objective itself, is the process. Because sometimes we can do well and sometimes we can do less well. We could not achieve anything, however, without the valuable help and cooperation of volunteers.

People from different countries, cultures, social and economic strata, against adversity and the difficult times that we live in, instead of sitting on their couch distancing themselves and musing on their fate or criticizing everyone and everything on social media, have the desire and the will, to offer the minimum for them, precious to us, and to help their fellow man and more. It is very important and useful, in addition to active users of social media, to be both sensitized and active citizens of society.

The benefits of volunteering and volunteering actions are multiple and not only for the target group involved.

In addition to helping persons in need, the volunteer himself benefits, as through his participation in charitable actions, he has the opportunity to make new acquaintances, gain work experience and networking, develop his skills and capabilities, gain high self-esteem, greater readiness to take responsibility and initiatives and a high sense of autonomy and independence.

Through volunteering, which is a lifestyle, we promote the concept of offering, social cohesion and solidarity, love, social justice and collective participation. Elements that are necessary for a healthy society, for a better today and tomorrow.

"When you want, you can! When we want, Boroume (“We can”)!"
