The Driving Force of Boroume #3

Tue 28 April 2020

The driving force of Boroume to achieve its goal is its volunteers. People of all ages, educational levels, professional or personal orientations and interests. Their common characteristic is that they all have a great inner need to offer and a positive frame of mind.

Yiannis Kostakis

Yiannis Kostakis has chosen to contribute to our work by participating in the program Saving & Offering Food at the House of Boroume, as well as in the program Boroume at the Farmers’ Market. He has studied Biotechnology at the Agricultural University of Athens. He really likes to read biology and cook. He also loves to travel abroad on exchange programs. While he has already lived in Spain and Poland, he is always in search of the next adventure to make new acquaintances and live new experiences.

In the past he has been a volunteer at the University mainly in organizing events for students who have come from abroad through an exchange program. Boroume, he confesses, offers him other things. Through this volunteer group, one participates as directly as possible in the rescue of food, while at the same time ensures the meal of someone in need, preventing food from ending up in the trash. The harsh situation, which many of our fellow citizens are facing, has prompted him to join Boroume’s team, since the sense of aid and offering is invaluable. At the end of his studies, he felt the need to offer where he could, instead of remaining apathetic.

From everyone's home to the big restaurants, he believes that the image of food abundance is the one that is related to our visual satisfaction. We tend to overdo it, since many times we do not calculate how much we cook and throw away a large amount of food because we don’t like to eat it the following day.

For Yiannis, Boroume’s team is possessed by kindness, positivity and joy. His favorite memory of our work is when he put together the first offer network. After training, he started receiving food donation calls and immediately sought to identify the appropriate recipient charitable organization. It was a very nice feeling when he had positive responses and people thanked him for what he provided them with.
